Gibson Tech Students Clean Up at State Competition

Gibson Technical Center students won the Emergency Medical Technician contest and the Life Support Skills competition at the 2017 HOSA State Leadership Conference. This is the fourth consecutive year for Gibson Tech students to earn gold medals. Gibson Tech teams also placed second and third in some categories to qualify for an international competition this summer.

Katyalynn Bourgeois and Hanna Redmon earned gold in EMT. Matthew Chastain and Annabelle Gray earned silver, and ShyAnne Baker and Shyanne Sena earned bronze.

GTC student William Merritt won the Life Support Skills contest. Courtney Welch and Baylee Marstall earned silver in CPR/First Aid, and Alyssa Huston and Haley Gambling earned bronze in CPR/First Aid.

“I am so proud of all the students,” said Gibson Tech EMT instructor Lacey Williams. “These students have all demonstrated a positive attitude and the willingness to go above and beyond any expectations."

More than 1,200 students from across Missouri competed in the event, held on March 27-28 in Rolla. HOSA is an international student organization which strives to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

"They have all worked so hard to do well in the competition, but also to become medical professionals in the future," Williams said.

Gibson Technical Center is part of the Reeds Spring School District but also takes in students from 10 surrounding districts. Bourgeois, Redmon, Merritt, Huston, and Gambling attend Reeds Spring High School. Welch and Marstall attend Branson. Gray and Baker attend Forsyth. Chastain is from Blue Eye, and Sena from Chadwick.

The medalists will travel to Orlando, Florida in June to compete at the HOSA 40th Annual International Leadership Conference. In addition to competing, the students will attend seminars to expand their knowledge and learn about advancements in the medical field.
